School for Student Leadership

For the past five years we have been very fortunate in having the opportunity for groups of Year 9 students to participate in the School for Student Leadership.  The aim of each SSL campus is to deliver “accessible, innovative and high quality residential leadership, personal development and project based educational programs to Year 9 students from Victorian government schools”.

There are three campuses.  The Alpine School is located at Dinner Plain in the Victorian Alps.  Gnurad-Gundidj is located nearby at Glenormiston, and the third is the Snowy River Campus near the mouth of the Snowy River at Marlo in east Gippsland.  During Term 1 2016 we have seven of our Year 9 students in residence at the Snowy River campus!

While they are at the SSL, students develop a Community Learning Project that is put in place when they return to school. The inbuilt BBQ in the undercover area is an example of one of these CLPs.

Expressions of interest for places in the SSL are placed in the year before and competition for places is very tight. Students in year 8 who are interested in the program should talk to Mrs Good to find out further details.

SCHOOL FOR STUDENT LEADERSHIP 2018

Hello my name is Abbey Burford. I am from Mortlake p-12 College, in an  country town called Mortlake.

Some of the reasons that I decided to come here to SSL is to improve and develop in many different ways such as confidence, growing from a child to a young adult, to meet new people, make new lifelong friends, and mainly improve on my leadership skills and responsibilities. I hope to successfully gain all of these skills and values and bring them home to put into use.

My highlights so far here at SSL have been making new relationships with all kinds of people, and also learning potential lifelong skills. I have also been enjoying all of the outdoor activities along the way as well.

SSL for me is a program to help young students grow from a child to a young adult. They teach you many life skills and how to handle difficult situations with a calm and positive attitude. At SSL we all must do a duty every day, whether it’s cleaning the bathroom to washing all of the dishes after each meal. Every student gets a turn at doing these duties. This teaches us to be responsible and pick up after ourselves. We also do some other programs at SSL, they are student committees, we have an evening class that is sometimes run by the students, and we also go on expos etc.

I would definitely recommend this to any other student that was willing to step out of their comfort zone and have a go at it. So far for me it has been an amazing experience and I am glad I decided to come.
