FasTrak
FasTrack is a program designed for talented students to allow them to accelerate through Years 5-10 so that they complete a wider range of subjects at years 8-10 and VCE level. It also allows gifted and talented students to accelerate their studies in their specific skill area.
PURPOSE:
Students who have been assessed as capable of working at a higher level than their age group may be given the option of accelerating their learning to allow them to reach VCE earlier. This will:
• Give them greater academic rigour earlier so that they are challenged and engaged in the curriculum.
• Allow students to complete VCE over 3 (or 4) years .
• Give students the chance of taking a wider range of VCE subjects. This is especially attractive for students who enjoy both humanities and sciences. This may also include University studies in some cases.
• Maximize their chances of an excellent ATAR score because of the increased number of subjects completed.
IDENTIFICATION…
To become a FasTrack participant, students need to show they are capable of working above their year level. The M.Y.A.T. Gifted and Talented screening test that is routinely conducted at Year 5 will be used to provide initial identification of students’ eligibility and aptitudefor this program. That data will then be triangulated with On Demand testing and NAPLAN data for potential in Literacy and Numeracy.
ADMINISTRATION…
• The program will be administered by the Curriculum Coordinator who will mentor and monitor the academic pathways of these students from Year 5.
• Once identified, the differing Pathways will be discussed with parents and students .
• The FasTrack Coordinator will continue to monitor and liaise with parents for the duration of the student’s years at Mortlake College to give continuity and support to these accelerated students.
