Early Years : Curriculum

At Mortlake College we implement the Early Years Literacy and Numeracy Program. The 2 hour Literacy session is based around the CAFE and Daily 5 Reading Strategy. This includes targeted small group instruction and reading practice. Students have specific and individual reading goals. The writing component of this session is based on the 'Big Write' and 'VCOP' model which engages students in their writing. Students participate in daily Sounds Write lessons to assist their spelling, reading and writing development.

Students are engaged in whole class instruction, small group work and individualised learning situations with continuous monitoring and assessment of student’s progress.THis allows us to teach to each student's point of need. Additional assistance is provided where needed to ensure students are achieving at their optimal level.

A discovery based curriculum approach is favoured to stimulate interest and create meaningful learning experiences throughout the Primary area. English, Maths, Science, The Humanities, Health and Physical Education, The Arts, Languages Other than English and Technology are the eight Key Learning Areas that make up the curriculum’s framework. Specialist Classes in Foundation to Year 5 include LOTE (Japanese), Physical Education and Music. We also implement a health and wellbeing program called Respectful Relationships where students participate in lessons and activities to develop core values.

Students in Foundation to Year 5 participate in fitness sessions each week. Foundation to Year 2 rotate classes once a week for Art & Science. Students in Year 2 engage in the Kids in the Kitchen program where they are introduced to rules for working safely in the kitchen, F-2 cooking delicious food and getting to know the different names of the equipment and materials that they use. In Year 3, 4 & 5 students are engaged in the Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden program where they alternate between cooking & gardening each week. There is an emphasis on eating food they have grown together. Each classroom utilises digital technology to enhance learning.

F-2 classes use desktop computers and ipads while students in Year 3-5 each have their own chromebook where they develop skills in Google Suite. Mathletics and Literacy Planet are examples of computer programs used to consolidate the learning done in class and can be used at home.

The school provides a wide range of co- and extra-curricular activities including sports at local, district, regional and state levels, annual camps to the bush or the beach, Bike Ed plus various excursions and incursions.

Leadership opportunities exist through house leaders for each class and small group leaders on camps and excursions, presenting awards at  F-12 assemblies and playground buddies. At the end of Year 5 students graduate from the Early Years of F-5 to the Middle Years of 6-7. Teachers work cooperatively, across all grades, to provide students with enrichment, or special activities. The program is planned so that all students are provided the same topics and concepts throughout each of their core learning areas. Several of the excursions and activities we have participated in recent times have been a day at the Sungold Field Days, Gnurad Gundidj, a day at Ballarat Wildlife Park, footy skills and drills with some Geelong football players, meeting with children's authors, visiting the local library and many more. Throughout the year we have several performances from professional companies.
